From Park Blankets to Packed Venues: How Sandra Built Austin Swappin’ (and How Mobile Podcasting Captured the Story)

At Hen’s Bread Productions, some of our favorite projects start in the most organic way — by showing up to film an event.

That’s exactly how we met Sandra, the founder of Austin Swappin’, Austin’s largest clothing and accessory swap community. What began as event videography quickly turned into a full podcast episode, recorded on location using our mobile podcast production setup.

And honestly? Her story is exactly why we love doing what we do.

Turning a Pandemic Idea Into Austin’s Biggest Clothing Swap

Sandra started Austin Swappin’ in 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic. What began as a small virtual Facebook group for swapping clothes turned into in-person meetups at Mueller Park — literally starting with a handful of people laying blankets on the grass.

Fast forward a few years, and Austin Swappin’ now brings together 150+ people every month, supports local vendors, partners with breweries and wineries, and donates leftover items to local nonprofit Thriftish.

During our podcast conversation, Sandra walked us through the entire journey:

  • Growing from 10 people in a park to packed indoor venues

  • Losing over 1,000 followers when her Facebook was hacked — and rebuilding from scratch

  • Learning event logistics on the fly

  • Partnering with local businesses like Wanderlust Wine Co, Batch ATX, and Hi Sign Brewing

  • Introducing ticketing, vendor collaborations, and giveaways

  • Building community first, profit second

What stood out most was how much of Austin Swappin’ was built by simply solving the next problem in front of her — weather, parking, space, organization — one step at a time.

No grand master plan. Just consistency, passion, and listening to her community.

Community-First Business in Austin

One of the most inspiring parts of Sandra’s story is how deeply community-driven Austin Swappin’ remains.

Unused items are donated to local nonprofits. Vendors participate through giveaways instead of expensive booth fees. Content creators of all sizes are welcomed — whether they have 150 followers or 50,000. Sandra actively polls her audience for feedback and uses it to improve each event.

It’s a reminder that in Austin, the strongest brands aren’t always the loudest — they’re the ones that listen.
